‘Learning to Read the Signs’
Wednesday, October 14th, 2009When dark clouds gather and you hear the rumble of thunder in the background…..you know that a storm is approaching. Jesus told His followers once that they could discern the weather but not the time they were living in.
In A.D. 79 the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum could see the smoke rising and could hear the rumblings of the earth. But they could not understand what was about to happen. Suddenly Mt. Vesuvius errupted with such force that the entire population was killed while they were in their routine.
People were at the market, the rich were accumulating wealth, the slaves were toiling in the fields, and all of a sudden…..destruction. Weeks before the explosion, the earth rumbled and shuck and the population could have escaped. The smoke kept rising from the furnace of the mountain. The population could not read the signs and flee!
This world is beset with all kinds of signs that tell us the judgment of God is coming…..yet most of our neighbors, co-workers, and family members can’t read the signs. May God help us be a voice in the time we live to sound the warning.
